Building a Deck Footing That Lasts Decades in Southern Oregon

What You Don't See Is What Protects You

When you stand on a well-built deck, you're standing on a whole system.

It's not just decking and handrails. The real structure starts below the surface, with the footings, posts, brackets, fasteners, and framing that most homeowners will never see once the project is finished.

The photo above is from one of our recent Luxury Decks of Southern Oregon projects. At first glance, it looks like a post sitting on a concrete footing. But there are a lot of small details in this one connection that all work together to make the deck stronger and help it last longer.

Our goal is to approach deck framing with a 50-year mindset.

I think about it the same way I think about the other major systems in a house. The plumbing, windows, doors, roof structure, and foundation are not supposed to be disposable. When they're designed and installed correctly, they should serve the house for decades.

A deck should be approached the same way.

With modern building science, better moisture management, better fasteners, and better structural connections, we can build the frame with the goal of making the deck multi-generational. The decking on top may eventually get replaced, just like flooring or roofing does, but the structure underneath should not automatically be treated as temporary.

Here's what that looks like in practice.

Pressure-Treated Wood Posts

The posts are pressure-treated lumber, which helps protect the wood from rot, insects, and fungal decay.

That matters quite a bit here in Southern Oregon. We have months of wet weather followed by very hot, dry summers, and outdoor structures are constantly going through those moisture cycles.

We also treat our cut ends. When pressure-treated lumber gets cut, the fresh end can expose wood that hasn't been protected as deeply as the exterior surface. We apply an end-cut preservative to those areas before everything gets assembled.

It's a small step, but these are the little things that add up over the life of a deck.

Post Brackets

Between the wood post and the concrete is a metal post bracket.

Its job is simple: keep the wood from sitting directly on the concrete.

Concrete holds moisture. If a wood post sits directly against it year after year, that moisture can eventually become a problem at the bottom of the post.

The bracket gives the wood separation from the concrete and creates a much better connection between the footing and the post.

It's one of those details nobody notices when the deck is finished, but it matters.

Oversized 18-Inch Footings

These particular footings are 18 inches in diameter.

We build in an area where the soil can change considerably from one property to another, and sometimes even from one side of a property to the other. You can run into hard clay, softer soils, rocky areas, and everything in between.

A larger footing spreads the load of the deck over more soil and gives us a substantial concrete base to build from.

The exact footing size and depth depend on the structure and the conditions we're working with, but on this project we chose to build these larger than what you commonly see on a basic deck.

I'd rather have a solid foundation under the deck than try to save a few dollars on concrete.

#4 Rebar Inside the Footings

Inside the footing is #4 rebar, which is half-inch reinforcing steel.

Concrete is incredibly strong when you're pushing straight down on it, but reinforcement helps it perform better when other forces are introduced.

The rebar gives the concrete additional reinforcement and helps hold the footing together as one structural unit.

Again, once the deck is finished nobody is ever going to see it.

But we're going to know it's there.

Gussets for Lateral Bracing

The angled wood pieces between the posts and beams are gussets.

Their job is to stiffen the structure and reduce side-to-side movement.

A tall deck without enough lateral bracing can feel surprisingly flexible. People walking across it, leaning against a railing, wind, and the normal movement of the structure over time can all introduce lateral forces.

Adding a diagonal brace creates a triangle between the post and beam. Triangles are naturally rigid, which is why you'll see the same basic principle used everywhere from bridges to roof trusses.

The result is a deck that feels much more solid under your feet.

Structural GRK Screws

We also use structural GRK screws in several of these connections.

These aren't ordinary deck screws.

They're engineered structural fasteners made specifically for connections where strength matters. They're easy to install, have excellent holding power, and allow us to make strong wood-to-wood connections without relying on generic hardware.

Southern Oregon decks also see a lot of expansion and contraction as the lumber gets wet through the winter and dries during the summer.

Using quality structural fasteners is cheap insurance in areas of the deck that are going to be carrying loads for decades.

Simpson Connector Screws

Where we use Simpson Strong-Tie hardware, we also use the appropriate Simpson fasteners for the connection.

The bracket and the fastener are designed to work together.

One thing I see occasionally is someone installing a quality structural bracket and then attaching it with whatever screw happens to be sitting in their tool belt.

That defeats the point.

Connectors are tested with specific types of fasteners, and we want the completed connection to perform the way it was designed to perform.

The screw is a very small part of the deck, but it can determine how strong the entire connection actually is.

Hurricane Ties

You'll also see metal connectors tying the framing together.

They're commonly called hurricane ties.

Obviously, Grants Pass isn't exactly hurricane country. But the idea behind the hardware is still useful.

A deck shouldn't just depend on gravity to keep everything sitting where it belongs. Structural connectors give us a positive mechanical connection between the different parts of the framing.

That helps resist uplift and movement and keeps the structure tied together as one system.

For the cost of a small piece of metal and a handful of screws, it's an easy decision.

Butyl Joist Tape

The black material across the tops of the beams and joists is butyl joist tape.

This is probably one of my favorite inexpensive upgrades on a deck.

The tops of joists take a beating.

Water drains between the decking boards and lands directly on the framing below. Then every decking screw creates another penetration through the top of the joist.

Over enough years, that's where a lot of older decks begin to rot.

The butyl tape creates a waterproof layer over the top of the framing. When a screw goes through it, the rubbery material forms around the screw and helps keep water from getting into the wood.

You cover everything with decking when you're finished, so the homeowner may never see it again.

That's exactly why we put it there.

Building a 50-Year Frame

This is really where all of these details come together.

There isn't one magic product that creates a 50-year deck frame.

It's the combination of a lot of smaller decisions.

Keep wood away from trapped moisture.

Protect the tops of the joists.

Use the correct connectors.

Use structural fasteners where structural fasteners belong.

Build substantial footings.

Brace the structure correctly.

Protect every vulnerable place where water is likely to sit.

That's building science.

We're looking at how water moves, how materials age, how loads travel through the structure, and where decks traditionally fail. Then we're trying to eliminate those failure points before they ever become problems.

If we can build a frame that lasts for decades, then the deck becomes less like a disposable outdoor project and more like part of the house itself.

Someday the homeowner may decide to change the decking. Styles change. Colors change. Products improve.

But I want the person removing those old boards to look underneath and find a frame that's still solid.

Maybe that's the original homeowner.

Maybe it's their kids.

That's what I mean when I talk about building a multi-generational deck.

Why All of This Matters

A deck is only as good as the structure underneath it.

You can put beautiful composite decking and expensive railing on top, but none of that matters if the framing underneath starts failing.

That's why we spend so much time thinking about the things that eventually disappear.

Footings.

Brackets.

Fasteners.

Joist protection.

Bracing.

None of these things are particularly exciting to look at, but they're the difference between building something that simply looks good when we leave and building something we're proud to put our name on.
